Sports. They lay claim to shared histories and tout time-honored traditions. Whether playing on the gridiron or sparring in the ring, sports seem to captivate and carry on through the generations. Georgia’s no different. Here, sports are rooted, revered, and relished. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in our very own Macon makes that abundantly clear.
Hall of Fame History
Founded in 1956, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame originally carried the name the Georgia Prep Sports Hall of Fame. A little later in its history, 1963, the hall of fame’s scope broadened to include amateur, prep, college, and even professional sports.
Before the turn of the century, in 1999, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame relocated to its current residence in Macon. The organization boasts the nation’s largest state sports museum, being 43,000 square feet in size.
