Phase I renovations
Plans for changes have been in the works for years when it comes to two Macon mainstays, according to reports. In June, about $7 million in renovations to the Macon City Auditorium and Coliseum began.
The much-needed updates have been broken down into two phases. Both phases will take place during the slower summer months. Therefore, Phase I should be coming to completion around the end of August.
The Macon City Auditorium’s fall schedule picks back up in September. At that time, patrons will notice several big changes at the venue.
For starters, the new ceiling inside the auditorium will be an eye-catcher instead of an eyesore. Gone are the old, mildewed, dome-like tiles.
Those have been replaced by an airy, modern vibe with exposed black steel beams. Not only will this update make the space feel more breathable, it will be better for the acoustics.
In addition to a new ceiling, the stage will also be bigger and better! Hopefully, this is an improvement that will attract more performances—plus give performers a space they’ll love too.
Another update guests will notice is at the lower level. There will be updated bathrooms as well as concession areas in the basement.
Once Phase I is complete, guests can expect new flooring, new furniture and new décor.
As for the coliseum updates, the ice floors will be redone, and the parking lot will be repaved. The venue already had a scoreboard and dasher for the local hockey team, Macon Mayhem.
What’s next after a September reopening? Summer 2023 renovations to the Macon City Auditorium and Coliseum will basically follow the same timeline as Phase I.
To clarify, a second three-month shutdown is on the horizon to finish additional renovations. These updates include a spacious lobby and new main level bathrooms, for starters.
If all goes accordingly, Phase II will finish up just in time for Macon’s 2023 bicentennial celebration!
