Macon is among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024

Oops. We did it again. In 2023, Macon was a must-see destination. This year, Macon is among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024, according to Travel + Leisure.

About Macon being named one of the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024

While it may come as no surprise that Macon is among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024 to locals, outsiders may not be as familiar with the city’s rich history and bright future. In fact, it is one of the city’s most notable historic landmarks that keeps drawing the attention of travelers.

More specifically, Travel + Leisure suggested a visit to Macon for those looking for cultural immersion. The travel brand noted there is something extra special for Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park on the calendar this year.

In 2024, Congress should approve Ocmulgee’s designation as a national park. If approved, the central Georgia destination will be the first national park in the state. What’s more, it will be the first national park in the country that will be co-managed by the Native Americans whose ancestors were forced to relocate from the site.

More about Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park

If you are new to the area or just planning a visit since Macon is among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2024, Ocmulgee consists of large earthen mounds created by Native Americans throughout thousands of years.

Once home to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Ocmulgee is situated along the Ocmulgee River Corridor. This makes the area home to diverse wildlife. According to the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative website, there are “32 mammal species, 170 species of birds, 26 amphibian species, 31 fish species and 35 reptile species.”
